Thermopylae began as an acoustic guitar riff written by Nick in 2011. The song took on new life during a night session in the basement of Sonoma State's Ives Hall, where distortion and volume changed it completely. During the mixing process, we opted to distort Mike's vocals to emulate the grit of his live performance. Thermopylae had the most takes in-studio and we almost settled for an earlier version that simply was not as good. To simulate a live environment, Mikey delivered this vocal performance in a blacked-out studio booth.
